However, the firm’s director assures that this step is taken to ‘shield the enterprise,’ maintaining steadfast commitment to fulfilling their ‘ultimate pledges’ in this crucial phase of commercial debt collection
Burry Port Marina Ltd., the operator of Carmarthenshire’s only harbour, has now entered administration. Carmarthenshire Council, which granted a 150-year lease to the company in 2018, is currently in discussion with administrators to resolve the situation.
Safeguarding the Business Through Administration
Despite the prevailing circumstances, the company’s director, Chris Odling-Smee, remains positive. He explained that the administration order was a strategic move to protect the business as it goes through a capital refinancing deal. With the harbour being a crucial hub, home to a lifeboat station and in dire need of dredging, Odling-Smee emphasizes the company’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities.
Carmarthenshire Council’s Efforts
In an update from Councillor Gareth John, holding the brief for regeneration, leisure, culture, and tourism, he disclosed that the council’s senior officers were closely liaising with the administrators. He confirmed that the council’s aim was to ensure a safe, fully-functioning, and attractive harbour. He also acknowledged the council’s aligned interests with those of the campaign group, Friends of Burry Port Harbour, local councillors, and the public at large.
The Council’s Response to Harbour’s Condition
In response to a petition presented by Friends of Burry Port Harbour earlier this year, the council revealed it had served Burry Port Marina Ltd. with a legal notice. The notice outlined breaches of the lease and demanded a comprehensive, time-bound plan to address the harbour’s state.
Management’s Standpoint
Chris Odling-Smee had previously assured the Local Democracy Reporting Service that they were not ready to abandon Burry Port harbour. He confirmed this stance in a recent statement where he recognised the council’s need for resolution and repayment of the money owed by his loss-making company.
Looking Forward
Despite the ongoing challenges and frustrations from residents, Odling-Smee reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his promises.
Local councillors and the Friends of Burry Port Harbour have expressed their concerns over the lack of progress and potential safety hazards. They urge immediate action to prevent any fatal incidents and restore the harbour to its full functionality.
David Williams, chairman of Friends of Burry Port Harbour, summarised the urgency of the situation, saying “We need the council to address the issues we have raised, and we need physical work to start now.”
